DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE : Quebec – New Brunswick Regional Assembly

As President of the Quebec Diocesan Council of Development and Peace, host of the Quebec – New Brunswick Regional Assembly, Gabrielle Lachance welcomed 120 delegates and other member participants of 23 dioceses in these two provinces. The event was held in Quebec city on April 25-27, 2008.

PRESENCE AND SERVICE AMONG IMMIGRANTS

This great desire grew in me in the last few years as I was working as a nurse at the Holy Cross Hospital in Drummondville, Quebec. Columbians were often hospitalized in the paediatric ward where I was working. Sometimes I was asked to go to emergency, or to the maternity ward or in radiology to translate from Spanish to French. I kept saying to myself, “When I have more time, I will offer my services to these people.

FORMATION SESSION IN LIMA, PERU

A formation session was held in Lima Peru from January 23-26, 2008. Twelve Oblates from Latin America were present. They came from Bolivia, Chile, Columbia, Cuba, Peru and the Dominican Republic. They shared experiences related to their human, personal and spiritual formation and the formation of Oblates who hold a responsibility in the Institute. In these countries, there are eight Oblates in basic and intermediate formation. Special attention was given to these particular stages of formation.

The Magdalene Islands are considered as a jewel of Quebec, the Madelinots (French name for the people who live on those islands) have turned towards the tourist industry to ensure their livelihood because fishing is in decline.

Haiti: WOMEN OF FAITH AND COURAGE

A young Haitian woman, Armande August, arrived in Quebec in 1952 to take a nursing course at the Enfant-Jésus Hospital. It was there that she met Oblates who were also studying and later became a member of the Institute. At the end of her studies in 1955, she returned to her country, but before leaving, she asked Fr. Louis-Marie Parent if he would like to found the Institute in Haiti. Fr. Parent agreed, but on one condition, that of recruiting other young women, interested in our form of life. In February 1956, Fr. Parent was invited to Haiti to speak about the Institute. Armande and some twenty young women were waiting for him. Among them were Venite Point-du-Jour and Lumène Chérestal.
